The Plastic Water Bottle Addiction

Here is a great video that helps explain why I have so much beef with bottled water. They lead to an incredible amount of waste, and most of that waste is completely unnecessary.  In 2011, the bottled water industry is expected to be worth $85 billion and produce over 5 billion bottles in the US alone.

Four out of every five plastic bottles ends in the landfill, and that is a lot of waste that could be avoided by drinking some tap water.  Most of these bottles are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which is refined from oil.  The process of making water bottles use the same amount of oil as 100,000 US cars would in a year.

Reusable water bottles and water filters are a great solution, and all it takes is a little extra effort, but don’t worry since bottled water is two thousand times more expensive than tap water, you will be paid for your effort.

I have always carried a Nalgene bottle, but after the BPA scare, I switched to a Sigg aluminum bottle.

The worlds toughest water bottle

thanks to Sigg

Nalgene has since come out with a new line of bottles that are also BPA free, and my wife likes those better (she drinks more water if she can see how much she has in her bottle). When it comes down to it though, it doesn’t matter what reusable water bottle you chose, as long as you make the switch away from the disposable ones that are filling our trash.
