Why don't any CFL supporters/articles mention the amount of mercury present in CFL's? Why isn't there any infrastructure set up to properly deal with this hazardous waste? I also notice no one mentions the power factor of CFL's...its about .5 (1 is best) which is very bad i.e. not very efficient since the actual VA (power consumption) is greater than what is implied. This is what Energy Star is all about...reaching a power factor of 1. If CFL's are required (at some point) to have a power factor at or near 1, they will likely be much more expensive. Incandescents are not as polluting...no mercury. That is the reality. BTW - I have had many CFL's go bad in less than a year...and the Gov't says to put them in a plastic bag and throw them away. Nice.

We removed all of the CFL's from our home due to burn out, where you could smell them burning. Then we checked the base of all the CFL's in our house and they had browned up at the base. These were all GE/Sylvania from Home Depot or Lowes. CFL's are not safe. These comments about 'read the operating instructions' are BS. I put a CFL light bulb in a bedroom lamp, and it burns up. Frankly, I see a conspiracy.

I hate CFL’s. They suck. Just what idiot designed them and when did the nightmare happen that led to this disaster? Enter this is any “design” competition and it would be laughed off the stage, at least by serious, unbiased judges. Government backing of this idea is just as bad, if not worse, as the “lo flow toilet.” What a waste all the way around, especially to our freedom.

And now they want to design cars? ha ha ha ha ha, I’d cry if it was so ridiculous!

Another big problem is the size of the CFLs, most of them are quite a bit longer than the older incandescent light bulbs, particular if they're dimmable. This means they often stick out from the lampshades and look rather hokey.

It's good to see the new halogen supersaver Osram Sylvania CFLs, I'm going to try some of them. www.sylvania.com/HalogenSS
