The town of Concord MA has passed a new law (going into effect next January) that will ban bottled water from being sold there. This is the first law banning bottled water outright, but there are more than 100 towns across the country that already prohibit spending City money on the product because of the environmental and economic costs. Of course the bottled water companies are not too happy about this law and are threatening to sue citing that it is unfair to single out bottled water when soda and many food items also come in plastic. All I have to say, is that you can’t turn on the tap and get out soda (unless you are in Willy Wonka’s Factory). As far as I am concerned, bottled water should just be the start. There are more responsible ways to distribute beverages than plastic bottles and we should be using them. Reusable glass bottles are one great solution that will cut down on costs while saving the environment. This graphic from Groovy Green shows some of the effects and costs of bottle water.
